Blood donation

Sun Jun 13, 2010 6:30 pm

Dear all offroaders
After a regular blood donation for tow years today i found my self band from donating because of the new role of Klifland hospital which manage Khlifa midical City and other health care departments belong to AD health Care authority , the role says any one have been to or lived in the UK from 1977 till 1996 can not donate blood because of the mad cows disease, because i did my diploma in the UK between 1993 and 1996 they have band me from donating and they don't even accept any British blood .
The new role is not negotiable.
The problem to is my blood type O- which is rare blood type and the role made it now worse, i have four daughters 3 of them has the same blood type which i can not donate to them in case of
need.
This is totally unfair    .
Just tought to let you know

That's too bad Ali. So they would rather a blood shortage than run the risk of saving a life/madcows disease? Very silly if you ask me!

Let's hope your family stay's safe and well mate. :D

Sorry to hear that Ali, but welcome to the "club". The ban is not a local issue, they are just now finally getting up to the standards that are commonly accepted in the west right now. This policy has been in place for a very long time in Europe and North America. It may eventually get down graded but will take a long time. I, too, am subject to the ban for similar reasons but also because of exposure to Malaria prior to my living in the UK for 2 years. Mad Cow is no joke so it is best for the medical world to over do it. It affects many of us who are "innocent victims" and I for one would rather have the safest and cleanest blood supply out there even if it does cause a hardship, I worry about my boys ever needing too. But it still stinks. :(

I was called this after noon by the blood bank in AD as they were in need for my blood type for an emergency case they have, they were rushing me over the phone and when i got to the doctor for the blood check after i answered an A4 page, she told me i am band and she had to delete my record from there system.
Now the question is: can't they test the donator blood for this kind of disease and fined the infection then refuse donating when they are able to test the blood for HIV an hour after the infection.
I was asking my self ho visited me in the UK from my family and guess what ? it my parents and my elder brother did his Master Degree and he had his wife and 4 children what a big problem we can't even donate to each other.
I think this is way too unfair
I will have to discuss it with some one there has to be an answer for this

Ali,
I do not think you will get too much of an explaination from the local authorities as to why the ban other than they are following internationally accepted guidelines. I hope these links will help to answer some of your questions. In a nutshell there is no test to detect the virus in blood plasma.
