Dear Toyota FJ Owners,
On two different offroading trips, the last one was last Friday, I have witnessed one of the most common mishaps occurring in the FJ - The Airbag system being released with a huge thud
So, please, all FJ owners are required to ensure that their Airbag system is disabled before hitting the sand.
I have been told that the cost of repairing the airbag is AED 28,0:eek: however, this figure requires confirmation from the dealer
All Marshals are also requested to remind any FJ driver to disable the system before hitting the sand.
Good luck.

I think in the cars before 2009 the airbags are turned off when you pull out the fuse disconnects the ABS & Traction Control.
The 09 on cars have a very sensitive sensor that will fire the side curtain airbags if the car tilt beyond a certian angle.
As Kalemero mentioned these 09 modles have a switch to deactivate the curtain airbags and it is a good idea to use it.

in my opinion .. disabling the air bag might be not a good idea
Offroading is a risky sport .. what would happen if you disable them and an unfortunate thing occur ..
always consider safety first .. loosing 28K is much better than loosing .. you know .. any thing more precious

That is another way of looking at the situation I guess.
The odds that you might have such a severe crsah in the desert that you will need to be saved by the airbags is very slim.
In caseo of a rollover its the belts that will save you not the bags!!!
As long as you are properly belted its a good idea to disable the bags. This is one of the reasons Toyota fits the switch to disable them.
