I know you guys will not like this but seriously consider an FJ or LC 80. They are great for on road and off road.

Parts are cheap, easily serviced and good resale value.

Wouldn't buy an FJ I'm afraid, I would only buy second-hand if I knew the owner and vehicle. Second hand car values here aren't very good anyway, the prices are pretty high compared to depreciation you'd find in other markets, so it's not very appealing.

Went straight from the licensing to the dealer of my prospective new ride. Having to work out availability, but at worst I'll have one by the end of February.
