yes martin. these four are the most "sand friendly". I have a 98 grand cherokee that I bought for 15000 3 years ago. Granted I had to do a lot of repairs, but that was due to me being won over by the mighty V8 powerhouse it holds.
Either a grand cherokee, cherokee, wrangler, or old pathfinder or prado will be best suited to your needs based on price range.

If your total budget is 20k it will be very hard to find a Nissan or Toyota... Jeep maybe but it might be quite old or bashed up for that price.
I would say for that price you need to be able to fix up a car that is 10-15 years old, so you will not find one that you don't need to do any work to or modifications - you need to budget for repairs too.
I actually prefer older cars, and I've done several projects so far even with as old as 1981 (GMC pick-up, lifted 6", nicknamed the Jeeper Eater LOL). I figure you should budget around 12k for purchase, 3k for immediate repairs/maintenance, then 3k for mods, and a 2 more k for any surprises along the way - that way you will stay within 20k.
You know what might be a good vehicle for your budget? It's not the best for the sands, and also not the most reliable, but it sure is cheap, great for camping, and it will take you everywhere except up and over long climbs, and you can get a decent one for 10-12k... Land Rover Discovery.

I just purchased a 2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ Auto for 19 grand at the Ajman Car Market. I came across cheaper ones too...around 15 grand. Few repairs cost me around 2 grand, now the car should be in tip top condition.
The good thing about the Cherokee XJ is powerful engine and just right size and comfortable too. Have a look at the Cherokee, it is a very able offroader and quite fun to drive for daily use.

Your budget will restrict what you can do unfortunately. Older rigs will, as pointed out, require quite a bit of tlc so if your a grease monkey like Tony then your in luck. If you could work out an arrangement with him I would push you towards Phantom's TJ, its out of your price range but its a great rig and only requires minimal tlc. I'd stick with the company Badrool for the time being until you could work something out for a better budget. Good luck!

It all depends on what purpose u r going to use the car for. will it be For serious sand off roading like some members do,or it will be ur daily car. u need to set ur mind then decide. like PR said it can buy u a 15 years old car and still will require some mods plus repair. LAndrover is very compatible car but the car maintenance and parts are expensive comparing to nissan and toyota. SWB nissan patrol 97 model and below will range around ur budget and if u can add some more money , u can have the newer shape that came after 97 model , it will take u anywhere and still u can use it on daily basis. that was my opinion, good luck
