To bead or not to bead?... That is the question ( apologises to Will Shakespear)

If you are still serious and are determined to get them speak to Engg Adel as he has the internals ones installed on one of his Jeeps and he can tell you what to look for and what to get.

Adel has the good ones installed by ARB

as wasif sad go for BFG'S they are good

Khalid installed the Staunch, and as I previously said, they can be troublesome

Took a look at the ARB Internal "Beadlock" today on the way home. Not exactly sure how they would lock the bead in place as they do not touch the bead of the tire. Was told that they prevent the bead from moving off of the bead's footing (for lack of better term) but still not sure how they would prevent the bead from leaking out. It might stop the actual pop out but think you will get a pressure drop. Still they seemed interesting.

Ugh! damaged rims! How did that happen and what was the resultant damage?

As with most things there are those who have had good and bad experiences with both so I'm still undecided. Seems like the external ones need a bit of attention every so often to maintain the correct torque on the bolts and the internal ones need to be expertly fitted. The simple solution is to go with the BFG. With 285/75/R16 on the FJ we've managed to get those down to 10 psi with no problems. The same should be possible with the BFGs. So, it's time for a new thread.

My thanks to all who replied and offered their experiences. It's very much appreciated.

Neil.

Beadlocks are more suitable for extreme wheeling and rock climbing where you might be at 4 to 5 PSI so its a good decison to shelf the idea for now.

Regarding the ideal pressure to deflate to I would recommend you stick to 12 PSI front and 14 PSI rear if you are getting teh BFG 285"s

The whole idea behind deflating is to sufficiently deform the sidewalls of the tires to achieve floatation on the sands.

The BFG's will be good at 12 PSI front and 14 PSI rear for use in the desert. Any further deflation from this will be counter productive, you will create a lot of drag that will sap the power.

The ideal deflation pressures are always a trade off between power loss and deformation. It is something you will have to work out for yourself as your driving style also comes into play with this.

Also the above mentioned deflation pressures will also ensure the tires do not pop out, anything lower and they WILL pop out.
