FJ - I loved the off-roadiness! This is probably the better off-roader of the three. I loved the power, just perfect for the long dune climbs, but especially I digged the suspension - and that's straight out the factory! With after-market parts, the suspension really becomes awesome. As noted, cramped interior, stupid non-visibility, and what's with the plastic checker-plate???

X-Terra - power was good, in fact comparable to FJ (just checked: 260hp for FJ and 265hp for X - surprise! But that's so close, you can't feel the difference) but the suspension was a sore point, both in absorbing hits and did not have the wheel travel. I'm not sure about after-market options (duh! I just realized: X-Terra has rear leaf springs!!! That's why)

Wrangler - Yes, I loved it! Great new engine, and they finally threw out the old gearbox. Also some nice refinements to the cab (which the FJ really needs!) and you have a gazillion aftermarket parts to choose from - plus, it's a short wheel-base and convertible! Dude, there is nothing more awesome than cruising the dunes in good weather with an open-top (and safety roll-bar). Compare top-less with the visibility out of the FJ! And, did I mention the Wrangler 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine delivers 285 horsepower and is a bunch lighter than the FJ and X?

So, in conclusion - Jeep Wrangler 8)

If the FJ came with a removable roof, and you could actually see out the back and sides, then I'd be undecided.

what a reply
thanks mate , too bad we dont have the like option here in the forum

I find the suspension better than the Jeep, have never felt like it was breaking my spine during hard hits - feels quite soft and pliable to me. There's after-market mods for the suspension, including additional leaves and shocks.

I'd consider moving back to the JK in a few years, if - and only if - I feel the reliability issues chronic to the entire platform are finally resolved.

I'm with you on the FJ visibility; I think it's a great vehicle but I just can't drive it.

If you have a family with teenage kids and this will be your daily use car then the FJ is out and so is the Jeep, get an XTerra

With the reverse camera and parking sensors on teh FJ thee is no issue with visibility anymore and its a fun car to drive. The plastic inside is exactly what a serious off road car needs to have as its completely washable inclusing the seats, you can take a hose and hose it out and nothing is going to happen to it.

The area whee the FJ is unmatched by any other 4x4 is its electronic aids specifically the A TRAC and then the diff lock. If you learn how to use the A TRAC you will hardly ever get stuck, it just lets you wriggle your way out of any situation.

In the end its your decision which one to go with. The cart springs and the four speed auto shifter on the X Terra are a deal breaker for me. The new Jeep is cool but its reliability is still suspect. FJ you can drive to the desert at 140 KMPH with the music going and the A/C on full blast do the trip without having to switch off the A/c or the music and then drive home...no overheating or power loss issues and nothing breaks on it too

Same goes for the Xterra, and the lumbar support means I never get a sore back even after driving 400km.

Unless you nose dive it then you might find some things do break, eh Wasif? But as we always say, it's the driver, not the car!!! ;)

I think pretty much everybody here has given their opinions and are all justyfiable. My one thing to add would be to do some research on after sales support. I know Western Motors aren't particularly great in this area, but I have also heard some bad things about Al Futtaim too. If you are going to buy from the dealership then this would be a big issue to look into as you would also want the best support from the dealership possible just in case there is any issues.

Trading Enterprises (Al Futtaim) in Dubai are far, far worse than Western Motors. Although neither are that great.

I have to totally disagree with you about this point, im a nissan guy and I got jeep recently, still patrol is my fav. Car but I got jeep just because of the amazing after sale support by Western motors, and as Saaed mentioned in other post our members have a discount there.

I was looking to get the XTera in 2010 when I rolled my first FJ but the only thing that put me off was the cart sprun rear

Once with Almost we did a challenge as to which car could climb the highest at Nagra and Rashed in his XTerar was almost to the top....the big tires on my FJ were taking up too much power but now with my new Pirelli 275's im gonna have to set up a rematch with Rashed

Yes, the FJ diff-lock is a good thing the other two don't have. A-Trac applies brakes to stop the wheels spinning so I don't like it much and prefer it off, and it only works in LO, right?

Thing about leaf springs is they can be as smooth as coils when set with the right weight, but they just can't allow for the same amount of wheel travel by design. So on say a washboard track they can be perfect, but when going over something tall, maybe cresting, they will hang up off the ground and then slam down, while the coils can drop the wheel and keep traction. Mind you, it's no big deal - my ex-YJ had coils on all fours and it was a hoot to drive!

Wasif, when was the last time you hosed down the interior with water, man??? You got stuck with the tide coming in? ;) Try compressed air, rather! LOL

You know one thing, the concept of an off-roading hang-out at the dealer's is pure marketing genius. I'd make a special "hospitality corner" just for them. Basically, throw some sand in a corner!! LOOOOOOL
