I am planning a trip across Europe too and was advised by Wasif to seek advice here:

I will be shipping the car to Beirut to cut down on about 2 days of driving through deserts and avoid driving as much as possible through Syria especially with the current situation.
Basically my trip starts in Beirut, stops in Cannes/St Tropez/Monaco and finishes in London. I will then fly back to Dubai.
I don't need visas anywhere all the way from dubai to my destination.
My main questions are what eastern european countries are best to avoid. I need to drive through countries with a decent motorway/highway network. I need nice safe minimum 4 or preferably 5 star hotels with private secure parking to stay in as I cannot really just leave the kind of car that I will be driving parked on the side of the road in a country that I don't know. I also want to make sure if the car breaks down there are competent garages that can work on the type of car that I will be travelling in.

So far I have found a shipping company to transport my vehicle to Beirut and they will take care of the triptick and international driving license for me.
My insurance company will not cover me outside the UAE or Oman so I have to find my own insurance for each country that I drive through I guess do you guys have any advice on insurance?

Yes I know shipping the car straight to the cote D'azure is faster and a lot cheaper and safer but the whole purpose is discovering new places and the whole adventure of the trip.

Tanjev has been nice enough to recommend countries to avoid and the ones that I should visit and his route sounds like a good idea. My main questions now have to do with vehicle insurance and accomodation. Also I am getting conflicting reports from the UAEATC that I need to put down a deposit of 50 thousand dirham just in case I decide not to bring the car back and decide to register it in another country. I don't see why this is any of their concern, my car is payed for in cash and there is NO outstanding finance on it. Maybe the person that I spoke to didn't know what he was talking about. Have you guys faced this issue yet?

I've postponed :( you sure you want to drive through Syria now?

I found out from people who have recently driven that insurance is easily and cheaply purchased at the borders; from 3-day policies to 2-weeks or 3-months, as you require.

How much was it to ship your car to Beirut, and how long would it take?

And, the big question - what car can you not leave by the side of the road and which may require competent garages??? ;)

-Shipping the car to Beirut is going to cost roughly 8000 dirham but it can be cheaper depending on the type of car as insurance plays a role in the shipping price and I have discovered also that the type of car also dictates the price as they calculate the cost depending on how rich they think you are (those shipping companies are theives). I am still shopping around for a cheaper company as I know the shipping price should not be more than 4 or 5 thousand dirham.
-It will take about 10 days for the car to reach Beirut. Some companies claim 8 days others 2 weeks.
-My trip will be at the end of July so I am hoping that the problems in Syria would have settled down by then.
-Something Italian fast and exotic :)

I think I have found a shipping company that I am happy to deal with:
The main concerns that I had was that I wanted a company that does door to door service from their office here to my home in Beirut. I want them to take care of all the paperwork. I want to make sure that they do not drive my car. Their transporter must be able to carry a low and wide vehicle without damaging it.

The company answered all my questions and they seem professional and they have branches in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi. I will visit them this weekend to see their set up and talk to them face to face but so far I am satisfied and their price is the cheapest so far.
-Shipping: 2500 Dirham
-RTA: 600 Dirham
-Triptick: 800 Dirham
-Insurance: 0.2% of the value of the car
-Temporary insurance on the border in Lebanon and paperwork: 100 dollars
-Transporting the car to my home in Beirut from the Leb border: 100 dollars
-Time: 8 to 10 days depending on how long they are delayed on the Syrian border
-They note down the mileage when you leave the car with them and the only distance that the car will cover is loading on the transporter, offloading in Lebanon and reloading on another transporter on the Leb border for delivery to my home or I can pick the car up on the Leb side of the Leb/Syrian border myself if I wished and drive it home myself.

If you are interested let me know and I'll forward the contact details to you.

P.s: I also found another company for cheaper and probably would use them if I was sending something like my FJ Cruiser over but wouldn't trust them with something more expensive or exotic because you have to take into account how low and wide the vehicle that you are sending is as you want to make sure that they don't damage the wheels, the belly of the car etc.... Also you need to make sure that some punk doesn't do burnouts and hand brake turns :) in your vehicle when you leave it with them (a set of clutches on those paddle shift gearboxes costs in the region of 30 000 dirham and if someone doesn't know how to use them they can burn them out for you in no time) so it's important to find a decent transport company.
