Hi guys,

2 new trips with photos and GPS route posted to http://weekenduae.com

One to Salalah, which is absolutely fabulous at this time of year, and the other one to Al Ruwais with Mercedes CLS 500. That is west of Abu Dhabi, near the ferry to Sri Baniyas and Delma islands.

I hope you find them useful and plan a trip there! 8)

For uaeoffroaders who have already been to Salalah, post some pics so the guys who have not can see what a paradise it is!!! 8)

And if you haven't been, then make a plan because it is a must-visit in the region!

Here's mine:

Wow, PR - another gorgeous photo.
I half expect to see Maria Von Trapp come whirling up the hillside.
The attachment hills are alive.jpg is no longer available
Looks like a fantastic trip. Can't believe I've not been there yet.

Then you must go~! :)

The temperature on the drive there were brutal, some of the highest I've seen on a car's thermometer: 56-57cc solid!!!

Then, after 1200km, you know you're almost there, but no change in scenery... and then suddenly you come off the plateau and down a hill and BANG!!! it's all green and foggy and the temperature dropped to 24c....

Really a trip you have to experience!

Salalah is absolutely out of this world. One cant imagine such a place exists on the Arabian Peninsula.

Best time of the year to go is June / July / August when its raining there and the whole place is green.

We were there a few years ago and stayed at an absolutely amazing hotel called the Marriott.....its 60KM away from Salalah in a place called Mirbat right on the beach with an infinity pool ending in the sea.....

Wow just saw it....really cool....is this on that Caravan route you had mentioned ?

What would the tempratures be life in the first part of Aug in Salalah any ideas ? The weather websites are a bit vague on this. I want to go when its nice and cool and raining. What would be the best time for this ?

Also any tips on interesting sights on the was to Salalah will be great

Salalah is just one of several places on the Arabian Peninsula....other places include Taif and Abha in Saudi Arabia and Ibb+ other numerous spots in North Yemen. These spots enjoy amazing weather (fog, rain, cool tempretures) while the rest of the Arabian Peninsula endures blistering summer heat.

I don't think I'll be visiting Yemen any any time soon!

Abha should be amazing! As a kid I remember Khamis Mushayit, near there - the oasis was amazing, and the rivers were full of fish. We found a chameleon there, and kept it as a pet for years 8)

Wasif, temperature would be mid-20s in Salalah!!! At least, that's what it was both times I was there.

I was told that in the early monsoon (June/July) the rain is heavy and the waterfalls run :) and in the later monsoon (July/August) it becomes foggy and drizzly and all green, and then it starts drying up (Sep/Oct) and then it is no different to any other Omani fishing town.

Dude, any sights??? If you read the website story, I give you all the GPS track to all the best attractions in Salalah, and the Google map, and even a written description of the directions! Oh, wait, you meant "on the way" to Salalah!!! Oh sorry. Actually, there's none if you want to go straight there! LOOOOL nice flat hot empty desert, about 900km of straight highway... make sure you've got good tyres, and spare!

Imagine 8 hours continuous driving on this:

If you have 2 weeks, then yes, there are amazing places to see on the way down!! Oman is very very beautiful 8) but most people want to get to Salalah directly to spend their time there, and not on the way.

If you have one week, then 2 days down, 2 days back, means you have only 3 days there....

I was there for 2 weeks, though, and was able to take it easy and explore many of the 4x4 tracks in the mountains. Very slippery mud, and lots of nasty rocks, so very difficult to go off the tracks. Here's pics of a nice trail:

and this is where you end up:
