Yes, accidents are real scary on a bike :( I'm glad you're ok, though.

I'm still learning, ScaVenger, and your cousins I'm sure are pros!! 8)

A colleague has recently joined us from Italy and wants to know where he can pick up a bike like this. Either a KTM or a Honda. Second had is what he is looking for.

Please advise.

Been riding since I was 15' love the freedom,
Gave up in Aussie, and took to cars,
Loved the life off being a rider, used to go to dirt tracks and all,
But seen to many accidents, and a few myself to make me weary as,

There's very few models that can run the dunes and also ride on road. And that was important for me - I want to ride to my choice of off-road places, without a car and trailer. Mainly because I want to travel off-road over distance and not always have to go back to the point I started, where my car and trailer would be parked waiting. Also, I live a few minutes from work, and so I don't need to take my car every weekday.

Unfortunately, most enduro bikes don't cut it in the dunes. Too heavy, too soft, not enough power. Forget things like Kawasaki KLR, Ducati Multistrada, even the BMW GS650, etc. Other enduros like the large 1150s are too heavy to handle. You drop it once, and you avoid soft sand from that day on!

The KTM 640 is perfect - very off-roady, still quite heavy, can cruise on tarmac, and basically KTM has won the Paris-Dakar forever on bikes like this! The previous owner rode it on trips to Masira Island in Oman, so you can really go far with the 640 Adventure.

The 450s are also perfect, and even better on the sands as they are lighter and therefore more powerful, but you don't get the large tank, and also on-road is really scary (for those that are road-legal).

So, tell your friend to be patient and wait for the right bike to come up. Aim for road-legal 400-600cc, and aim for a large gas tank (aftermarket is possible).
