Help wanted with car/tires purchase decision

Hi folks,

Would appreciate some help and tips on the following: I'm currently thinking about buying the new Grand Cherokee in the "Overland" trim. But all the Overlands come with tires in 265/50R20 dimensions.

My question is, would these tires still perform ok in the desert? I'm a little concerned about the smaller sidewall height and hence less ability to decrease pressure and glide over the sand.

My sand driving is pretty limited and I probably do 98% of my mileage on the road. However, when I do want to go for a desert BBQ I don't want to at stuck.

Thanks a lot

PS: I don't need answers like "buy a Land Cruiser instead"...

Good day Jeep Rookie,

You are right with a 20 inch rim the space for rubber around it is limited there for when deflating for sand the footprint won't serve as well as a higher side walled tyre. My recommendation would be to go down on the wheel size and increase the tyre size up to the overall original diameter (original wheel size +original tyre = new smaller rim + new larger tyre). Remember if the offset profile on the rim is not the same as the original, you may get wheel rub on the body or in the wheel Wells.
