This thread is intended as an " how to" for using a GPS.
There are many questions I have about how to effectively use your GPS.
I have a Garmin Nuvi 710 and it has an offroading mode.
The questions are :
1. How to create and save a route on the move. I know you can create one before you set out but if you are not sure where you plan on going but would like to record the journey how can this be done.
2. How to add custom POI's and configure Proximity Alerts.
3. What kind of files are compatible with a Garmin.
4. How to create routes on Google Earth and then transfer them to your GPS.
5. How to transfer routes that you might find on websites like
http://www.everytrail.com to your GPS.
I am sure there are many more questions that others might have too so feel free to add to the list and also to come up with answers to these queries.
GPS experts ....your comments and advice is wanted !

Then download the english language version from Garmin's website. It's a pdf file:
http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/nuvi750- ... Manual.pdf
A GPS that does Track Logging is so much better as you can create routes from your trips about the sand dunes. "Offroad" mode really isn't that helpful other than letting you select and guide to waypoints that are not connected by roads in the map.
But I digress, download the manual and it will answer many of your questions. I do not recommend the Nuvi series for offroad use, its great on road but to each his own.
Happy reading.

Things like garmin / nokia / blackberry / iphone are products I stay away from. just because they are so limited. Applications or Usage is charged.
GPS - it all depends on the platform you are running, the size of the screen is not a problem here.
By Platform I mean if you are running it on Unix/ Windows CE or a specific designed platform like garmin to run only their kind of applications.
The main thing you should know if your GPS can poll at the rate of 1sec when you are recording
The best this is to go for a windows mobile phone and recommend the HTC HD2.
you can install as many applications as you wish (everyone is sharing them) and so many are free. When you are travelling to other countries it is something that you cannot go without..
check out an application like
http://www.gpstuner.com/en/ which puts garmin back to the last generation.
