So THAT'S what they mean on the roadsigns, "Watch out for Surprises". Thats why its so important to drive with at least one more car. I don't imagine his cellphone reception was very good down there.

Hallo? Hallo?

Poor guy... it could have been at night... driving along in the nice and flat open sebkha, and next thing you know the earth has swallowed you up! Maybe a little fence around that gigantic hole could have helped? It was built with bricks and concrete, so whoever did that could have at least arranged a circle of big rocks around the mouth?

Quiet a few wells like that in Qatar too but at least they seem to have small walls around them to keep the critters out. Lucky sod for sure!
