Jane, alf is a thousand in Arabic.

em-yah or mi-yah is a hundred, emyaat is a several hundreds.
alf is a thousand, aa-laaf is a several thousands.
malyooooon - is a million, em-laayeeen is a several millions.

this is in local dialect of course.
