Hi guys
since we won't have to spend out any money on the jeep for quite a few weeks (every cloud has a silver lining), then we are thinking about getting a winch for the Badrol.
What kind do we get? Where should we buy it? Who should fit it? Will it fit within our current bumper setup?
Thanks

Not sure how the Shermin has his winch fitted but there are plenty of write ups in the Aussie Patrol forums. I installed my winch myself, it wasn't too hard and only took about 1.5 hours, mainly due to the lack of clear directions. But it was pretty straight forward and after I realized something I did not see before I could have had it done in half the time. AEV, ARB, WM, and other shops can do the installation if so inclined, just plan in advance.
I have a "Warn 9.5XP" which is rated at 9500 lbs. I got mine at AEV in Dubai as they had the better selection (ie. more models to choose from) compared to other shops who seem to be limited to the "Warn M8000". A general rule of thumb is to have a winch that is rated 1.5 times your GVW. I went a little larger as many of the cars on our trips are much heavier than my JK plus I carry a snatch block for those times when I really need to double the pulling capacity.
It is also advisable to add a second battery either in direct series or switchable to protect your car. This will help with the high current draw during long duration winching and also deter premature battery failure. I know of two battery failures while winching here in the UAE and have observed my battery idiot light come on at least once. Some will say all you need is a higher output alternator which does help alot but it can cost more than a dual battery setup.
As far as brands they are nearly neck in neck, kind of like the FJ/TJ/JK whatever car battles. I would rate them as "Warn", "Superwinch", and "Ramsey" as the top three in performance and quality. There are others but I do not know them as well as these three.
