personally I use ddmmss, as do most club members as far as I am aware. I think this is what all Garming comes with as standard settings as you say so it is just left that way for ease of use!

This is something we need to look into and standardize so that it is possible to share waypoints in a universal format.

I usually use hddd mm.mmm as that is the default for geocaching and seems to be the default here also. Professionally, on the jobber, I use hddd mm ss.s.

Personally I prefer to use hh dd mm no particular reason actually. However, I am a bit concerned about the awareness and unifying the use of Datum settings.

The standard used by UAEOFFROADERS Marshals is DD MM SSS. We have been using this for quite a long time and for consistency, I strongly advise everyone to use the same.

I do agree with PR's comments, however, I have never had any probs.

So, 24 34.179 is 24-degrees-34-minutes-and-179 seconds.

I used the same as the Google Earth so for me logging way points from Google is simple.

I use degrees and decimal minutes ( hddd mm.mmm) as its the default for Geocaching so all my software on my PC viz Basecamp, Mapsource & GSAK along with Google Earth are all set to this format

You can set Google Earth to what ever format you want. :) It is also not to difficult to change the settings on any of my garmins so i flex to what i am given.
