Jeep Transmission DISASTER!

Tue Nov 22, 2011 7:37 am

My Jeep is in a state of disrepair!

Its transmission has undergone surgery for the second time in 3 weeks. The last occasion has been ongoing for 12 days now...!?!? before that 5 days...
Missed offroading trips = bad news !!

I know some people will be all ha ha - "Just Empty Every Penny", "call the Jeep recovery" etc

But seriously - is this too long ?
and would you complain at that ....??

thoughts please..

We would need a little more info mate. Is it a manual or auto, do you have the stock tranny cooler or an aux one, what were the symptoms?
When it went in last time, is it now the same problem as before or a new problem? Who fixed it last time, what did they fix, what are they fixing now?

I know how you feel as I had to replace my tranny twice on my ZJ, but that was 13 years old. The first time I had a rebuild which cost AED5000 with a six month warrantey. Six months and about two weeks later it completely died. I then got the tranny replaced with a used one, that was two years ago and it is still going strong. It has a leak, but no other problems!

Let us know more details and maybe we can help a little more! :D

Hey,

I do need more info and am gonna call for the details, but in the meantime: automatic 2006 model and assuming stock tranny cooler!
the symptons are pretty simple - the first time it kept popping out of first gear some times with a loud pop/bang! they fixed it (under warranty) and replaced some parts (to be confirmed).
After that it never worked quite properly and every now and then would pop out of first gear - although with much less of bang. As it was just under warranty, I though I should get it sorted.

now he's going on about it not alligning properly and something to do with the lift on the jeep!?! so the last order if for a part, whcih lowers the transmiission to align it.

what do you think?
will get more details today. It just seems far far too longer time now - overall about 2 and a half weeks !

But first time, it just

So it seems like you had the same problem as mine did. How much lift do you have?

Also, you would only get a transfer case drop, not a tranny drop as far as I know! The tranny is fixed to the cross member, so they must be droppin gthe cross member. WQouldn't hurt, but I can't see that being the problem.

Did you do it at dexol? If so, they are the ones who did mine then it died two weeks out of warrantey. Be very careful with them, they give a good impression but are still a low-skilled workshop in Musaffah regardless of how shiney the sign's are!

Hey ,

you're right - it's tranny woes heaven here!

I'm an Abu Dhabier - and jeep ever so just inside warranty so the wonderfull Jeep Dealership mechanics, Mussafah, Abu Dhabi are doing the work!
Or at least talking about doing the work... soon.. tomorrow... maybe - oh yea best order a part :-(

Im not sure about the lift height, but the Jeep was a special edition which came from the dealr with the list installed - so should'nt have been a problem, and hasnt been for the one year Ive had it!!?

Dabdob - hope to get this fixed real sooooooooon, and go for a drive with you !!

Paul if you have a lift over 2.5 inch then you do need to lower the transfer box but that is only to reduce the angle of the drive shaft (I would use 1 inch lowering kit from quadratc anyway) so if he is saying that the gearbox is not aligning because of the lift he is full of @##$$%%.

In a manual gearbox you have a main shaft that most of the gears are on if that shaft is worn then you will have problems selecting gears, In a auto box its all about pressure to select and hold your gears maybe all it may be is to have the transmission body completely flushed out and cleaned new filter.

As JC said, I would also look into getting an aux cooler to replace ro work in line with the stock one. the stock ones are crap at best and have been known to fail in a very bad and expensive way! Good job it's in warrantey though, otherwise you'de be paying an arm and a leg at the dealership! :D
