Mosalf - there is an "offroad" setting on mine (Nuvi 250). From memory: menu > tools > settings > navigation > (preferences?) > offroad. You'll find that when you buy it, it will be set for "fastest" which is an on-road setting.

There will also be a "trip recorder" (or similar name) which draws a blue line on the screen to show where you have been (so that you can retrace your route if you need to)

Hi Richard,

I saw on the net a website advertising Garmin maps for UAE AND OMAN OFFROAD. It's MARASAT. Have you checked it out yet?

Masarat is a dealer who sells all kinds of GPS systems. The only GPS worth buying is the Garmin range and we can get good discounts for you from AMIT the official Garmin dealer.
MASARAT was once selling what he called an "off road UAE" map. I bought it and its was just a few tracks in Dubai, it was supposed to have future update options as part of teh deal which never happened so I would stay away from Masarat.

The guy who runs it is a nice guy though !

Hey WASIF, nice meeting you today and thanks for the super pointer in the FJC. I guess I was unduly worried On the L4. However for personal satisfaction I will certainly take it to the workshop post EID. Once again thanks for your help. Happy Eid!

Also, find the trip to Salamat with Yamaha Raptor, as those dunes are pretty awesome, too, and closer.

Check out the pics! 8)

Hope you find the GPS file and map useful - it's for your use and download 8)
PR - I am awestruck at your blog weekenduae. Mind boggling. Your are simply awesome. Please let us know when next you are planning a trip. And to think of the time I wasted visiting Al Ain zoo when I should have looked you up in the first place :) I would have gained so much. Well enough lamenting on the past. Please let us know when you are planning another trip.

Hi Richard and WASIF. Thanks guys o came to know that my nuvi has a off road mode as well. But would still prefer to pick up a 276 if available.

It's my pleasure to share these routes with you guys 8)

As for the GPS tracks on weekenduae.com they work very easily as follows:

1. Click on the map and it will open in Google Maps
2. Click to download the KML file, and then you can then double-click to open it in Google Earth, or import it into your GPS

To import the KML file into your GPS unit, you need to figure out how your unit works, and I'm afraid I can't help much as each unit is different. I do know that the KML file format is by far the most popular (because of Google Earth) and new GPS devices can import directly without any hassle.

Some older GPS devices will only recognize their own file format, and so you must first convert the KML file to whatever format your GPS uses. You can use a free converter called babelfish for this (or many others)

So, Wasif, I'm not sure how a Garmin Nuvi imports tracks or routes :( but I can tell you it's in the settings somewhere LOL
