Oil Changes

Thu Dec 15, 2011 9:13 pm

Just asking for people's opinions on the frequency of oil changes. My Jeep is supposed to have the standard 5,000km oil change interval but I'd be interested to hear if other members change their oil more often than the schedule (because of the way we use our vehicles) or just follow the manufacturer's guidance because they are already "harsh conditions" schedules.

I believe "because of the way we do it", you will need to change the oil more often,, best thing to do is check the oil after every trip.

I normally use the ADNOC oil rated for 10,000kms but change it every 5,000. One word of caution, coz ADNOC does the oil changes at the speed of light, their 'mechanics' have been known to round off the drain plugs, it's happens to me twice!!!!!

If you use good oil, and a good filter you can get away with 5000 in the winter, but in the summer, if you go offroading I would change it every 3000 and use a slightly heavier viscosity oil.

for my offroad car (93 Nissan Patrol) i use adnoc oil 5,000km and i change it every 2,000 +/- with filter.

last week i opened the cylinder head because i got damaged spark plug threads, and the result from changing oil quickly is the engine very clean inside with normal steel colour, pistons, cylinders, bearings, valves, rockers, arm's was on 95% shape. (the engine was overhauled 5 years ago)

i was amazed because i go for two trips minimum per week and every time i push the car to the limit.

Thanks folks, pretty much what I was thinking: slightly thicker oil and 3,000km changes rather than 5,000km. After all, it's one of the cheapest "parts" of the vehicle, so why cut corners?

Exactly. And the car feels soooo happy after an oil/filter change.
Why not spoil 'em a little since we ride 'em so hard.
