You want a US Specification GMRS/FRS radio. The EU version operate on different frequencies. Motorola is a brand name not a type. YOu will find Uniden, Cobra and a few others that make this type of radio. The most important part to watch for is the US Specification mentioned first.

Thanks for your help, I still am a little confused would a radio like the Quansheng - TG-UV2 work ok? What model and make are you using? In the states we have family style radios and we have nicer radios which require a license. I understand the license would not apply here. I am guessing we would use the better of the two.. And dragon mart would have these and they are in Dubai correct.
Thanks so much

The Chinese TG-UV2 will work fine. It is what we in the radio world consider a "wide-open" radio which means that it is capable of transmitting on a plethora of frequencies and bands. These are not type-accepted by anyone (Agencies like the FCC) and would be deemed illegal in most countries due to the lack of type-acceptance. You see these radios a lot here as they do jet the job done well.
I have four Uniden GMRS/FRS radios that I got from our friends at Amazon. They work more good enough and I have them for those trips when others are short a radio. My primary radio in the Jeep is an Icom IC-2720. It is a mobile radio made for amateur radio and has been "opened" up for use on the GMRS/FRS frequencies.
Yes, dragon mart in DBX is the place to get them here. Just remember these radios are all technically illegal here and are only tolerated by the authorities for safety purposes in the desert.

Hamed Center much close and easier to get to from Abu Dhabi + I know people who went to Dragon mart and got stuck in the parking and had to call for recovery.
