Hi Dave,
I vouch for the statement from MB Hammer, leosoul and Tintin. I had my first trip with the gang last weekend and I felt very comfortable with them. For the record that was my second ever offroad trip.
I was lent a radio when I announced prior to the trip that I had no radio, and I was pulled out with others' recovery kit when I was stuck a couple of times.
It is a good advice though to always have a spade, a snach strap and shackles as a minimum when you go offroad. The other stuff you can buy later on.
