Great article PR. you are lucky that you have an ideal job that pays you to do such nice trips and "test the waters" + explore. need to come with you one day on some of these extraordinary trip. 
Question though : the LR3's capability in the desert are good and it can handle majority of stuff? pros/cons?

Yeah, I was quite surprised by the LR4. It is heavy and when you first get in the sand, it just bogs down, useless - but it's the electronic controls that keep dropping rpm and braking wheels that screw it up. I had to fiddle with the various options to find how to let the wheels spin and the rpm stay high. I can't remember now what it was, but it wasn't the 'sand mode' dial - that was useless, basically starting out in 2nd and that's all. If you can spin around on the flat sand without the brakes coming on or the rpm dropping, then you're ready to go into the dunes. Engine was plenty powerful, ride was comfortable, A/C was great - I would hate to have to pay for maintenance, though, as it felt it would be often and expensive! (maybe not, just my feeling)
Desert roses are in the flats, where water had been some time ago but it's now evaporated. You can see the crystals left behind by water, and you need to dig down.

I just need to stop more often than regular drives, but, you know, I've gotten to like it. I used to go out and drive, drive, drive LOOOOOOOL but now I see so much more because I keep stopping and walking around and so I really explore an area and get to find all these things that before I just would fly past!
So if you guys don't mind a slower pace and frequent stops, then sure you're welcome to join me. You can vroom vroom as well if you like 8) I don't mind a little right foot every so often
When I stop, I'll take pics - and sometimes that means I need to put the car there, and walk up there... and then, no, better try from this side.... and jot down some notes... and what's in that hole?... so that can take 15-45 minutes and be boring for other cars waiting for me, so I tend to go out on "business drives" with a few people that know well what to expect, and who also like to explore on foot as well as drive.
